Growing up in Poteau made it easy for Becky Pickle Brinkley to come home! Becky is the daughter of the late Clyde Pickle of Poteau and Carolyn Cheely Turney of Poteau. Becky graduated in 1980 and moved to Oklahoma City. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Central Oklahoma and is currently running the Black Sheep Winery full time. Her husband, David Brinkley, grew up in Idabel, but also spent some time in Poteau with Becky after he graduated from Idabel Gray High School and attended Carl Albert State College on a baseball scholarship in 1979. He is the son of Larry & Laura Nell Brinkley of Idabel. David grew up in Idabel and was employed by the City of Idabel as Assistant Fire Chief for ten years and also worked for his dad at Brinkley Auctions until the couple moved back to Poteau in June 2006. They have four children: Cari Lyn Page of Poteau, Candice Lee of Poteau, owner and operator of Almost Italy! Restaurant & Grill, Ashlyn Ervin and Jace Brinkley of Springfield, Missouri and three grandchildren, Donavan, Collyn, and Cadence.
It wasn't until the couple had visited their friend Jerry Delaney, at Delaney's Vineyards & Winery in Grapevine, Texas that they decided that's what they wanted to bring to the Poteau area. Wineries are a wonderful tourist destination for many travelers on the weekend for short trips around the state and adjoining states to Oklahoma.
The couple relocated their winery and production facility in Feburary 2010 to 712 S. Broadway in Poteau. The winery and tasting room are open Wednesday-Saturday. The winery opens at 11:00am. If you come by and we are not at our facility, please call, we are always eager to serve you!
The Black Sheep Winery wines have received several medals from the Oklahoma State Fair. Robert Turney is currently the winemaker for Black Sheep Winery.
